My office/reading nook
This room has had many uses! It was a bedroom, then a guest room/playroom for all the girls Barbies and stuffies, a bedroom again, and finally an office. For my final project in my interior decorating course I decided to add a reading nook and bookshelves to the already declared office space. First the walls needed serious treatment - stickers, LED light adhesives, holes and repairs. Then I chose a softer blue called French Moire from Sherwin Williams. It was a bit bluer than I wanted but I do like it. I looked at some websites for carpenters - I wanted to extend the bench of the window seat to create a reading nook. I spoke to 3 people. One I thought stood out, then he had a baby and missed a consultation so I went to the next on my list. Andrew from Andrew’s Carpentry came. He was quiet, but nice and gave a reasonable quote. The third guy wanted to challenge himself by doing something out of his “wheelhouse” - sorry not in my house! It took a couple of visits to construct the bed and shelves. Andrew added crown moldings at the top to blend with my other molding and create a built-in look. Then my husband painted the room and I had to paint the shelves… I don’t know how many times I went back and forth between blue and white, blue and white. Yes, I used painter’s tape but let’s be real, that stuff doesn’t work most of the time. Anyhow I got it to where my Type A personality could tolerate it. Now it was time to decorate! My favorite part! I hadn’t been much of an on-line shopper at that point but I hit it hard for this project. I bought the mattress, artwork, curtains, pillow covers, office chair and lighting from Amazon. I bought the day-bed quilt set from Bed Bath and Beyond (such a deal with 3 pillow covers - it fit the twin mattress perfectly without having to order custom bedding!). I bought the window arch decor from Wayfair. All of the decor on the shelves came from my collection, some thrifting, some Marketplace. I kept my beautiful desk from Wayfair from a few years ago. I just added a cuter office chair. I had bought the area rug to place under the desk when I set it up as an office the year before. The rug wasn’t quite the mix I wanted with the other patterns in the room but it was ok for now, especially with my budget of $4500 all used up. The room is pretty, feminine, romantic, and cozy. I love peonies and those two pieces from Amazon were so reasonable - I think $167 for the pair. I love to read, I love to be in the sunlight with my cats and here is the perfect space for me in the nook. I love how the room serves as a multifunctioning space now (oh, and there’s all my wrapping and ribbons in the closet for gifts! - I did all my Christmas wrapping on the floor and on my desk!). Multi-use spaces and things are so satisfying! Are you inspired to create a reading nook in your home?
